Sound Art Assignment

For AICE Media Studies, we had to create a soundscape, or scene made of just sounds, using sound affects that we created ourselves called foley sounds. We chose to do a scene of driving a car in traffic in a storm. We handmade the sounds of thunder, walking in the rain, and the rain. We made the thunder using the loud boom of a textbook dropping on the ground and the shakiness of tinfoil blowing in the wind. The walking was created by squishing or walking on wet paper towels. We added these under the main sounds to have them sound subtle just like they would appear in a scene. Most of the sounds were easy to think of and do but we had to take many takes to get the right sound clip. I personally thought my effect of walking in the rain was a bit gross since I had to squish wet paper towels on the bathroom floor with my bare hands. Thinking of the effects was harder than actually doing them though. Overall, we did it well and it sounds really accurate.

This is our soundscape scene.

These clips show the process of creating the foley sounds.
