The 5 Master Edits

  •  Contrast- For this type we decided to film conflicting stories of a nice and happy interaction/greeting and the beginning of a fight. These contrast between the emotions happy and angry. We filmed it by following the subjects with the camera to make it realistic. We added music to reflect the emotions being shown in the clip. We also added filters to reflect the emotion as well and the sense of happiness/anger. Diegetic sound is used because the sound is seen and heard on-screen.
  • Simultaneity- For this type, we decided to go with two separate scenes where a friend calls her friend to come to the bathroom and creates a sense of urgency only for her to be in the wrong bathroom. I used a vignette and high angle to show the vulnerability of the girl who needs her friend's help. This scene is using direct sound and a voice over used to show the phone call coming through one end.
  • Leit Motif- For this, we showed music playing whenever a pretty girl walks by. This uses music and direct sound. This shows that the girls are attracted to her or think she's cool.
  • Parallelism- We showed a girl walking through an empty hallways vs. a crowded hallway. This uses offscreen sound of the talking in the hallway coming from behind the camera and offscreen.
  • Symbolism- This shows a love letter being given and then destroyed at a later time. We used sonic flashback with the boyfriend saying "I love you" from when he gave her the letter to later when she ripped it up. This shows that she was thinking of when he said it before. This overall creates a sad mood, paired with the crying in the background.

Sound Art Assignment

For AICE Media Studies, we had to create a soundscape, or scene made of just sounds, using sound affects that we created ourselves called foley sounds. We chose to do a scene of driving a car in traffic in a storm. We handmade the sounds of thunder, walking in the rain, and the rain. We made the thunder using the loud boom of a textbook dropping on the ground and the shakiness of tinfoil blowing in the wind. The walking was created by squishing or walking on wet paper towels. We added these under the main sounds to have them sound subtle just like they would appear in a scene. Most of the sounds were easy to think of and do but we had to take many takes to get the right sound clip. I personally thought my effect of walking in the rain was a bit gross since I had to squish wet paper towels on the bathroom floor with my bare hands. Thinking of the effects was harder than actually doing them though. Overall, we did it well and it sounds really accurate.

This is our soundscape scene.

These clips show the process of creating the foley sounds.
